How to Make Yule Log
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 11" x 17" (27cm x 43cm) baking pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang on the sides to help with rolling.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients: eggs, melted butter, vanilla extract, and boiling water. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs.
- While the cake is baking, prepare the filling. In a bowl, beat the heavy cream until soft peaks form. Gradually add the powdered sugar and continue beating until stiff peaks form. Gently fold in the chocolate chips and vanilla extract.
- Once the cake is baked, immediately invert it onto a clean kitchen towel dusted with powdered sugar. Carefully peel off the parchment paper.
- Starting from the short end, tightly roll the cake with the kitchen towel. Let it cool completely.
- Once cooled, unroll the cake and spread the whipped cream filling evenly over the surface.
- Reroll the cake and place it seam-side down on a serving platter.
- Dust the Yule Log with powdered sugar and decorate as desired with chocolate shavings, fresh berries, or sprigs of holly.
