How to Make Yule Log

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 11" x 17" (27cm x 43cm) baking pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang on the sides to help with rolling.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients: eggs, melted butter, vanilla extract, and boiling water. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs.
  5. While the cake is baking, prepare the filling. In a bowl, beat the heavy cream until soft peaks form. Gradually add the powdered sugar and continue beating until stiff peaks form. Gently fold in the chocolate chips and vanilla extract.
  6. Once the cake is baked, immediately invert it onto a clean kitchen towel dusted with powdered sugar. Carefully peel off the parchment paper.
  7. Starting from the short end, tightly roll the cake with the kitchen towel. Let it cool completely.
  8. Once cooled, unroll the cake and spread the whipped cream filling evenly over the surface.
  9. Reroll the cake and place it seam-side down on a serving platter.
  10. Dust the Yule Log with powdered sugar and decorate as desired with chocolate shavings, fresh berries, or sprigs of holly.
