How to Make Amazing Veggie Burgers
- Drain and rinse one (15-ounce) can of black beans with cold water.
- Drain the beans thoroughly and pat them dry with paper towels.
- Place the black beans in a food processor fitted with a metal blade.
- Add 1/2 medium yellow onion (finely chopped), 2 cloves garlic (minced), 1 large egg, 2 tablespoons BBQ sauce, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper.
- Pulse until the beans are roughly the size of peas. Do not over-process into a puree.
- Transfer the bean mixture to a large bowl.
- Stir in 1/2 cup all-purpose flour with a spatula until evenly combined. The mixture will be thick.
- Stir in 1/2 cup breadcrumbs.
- Gently fold in 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese.
- Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions.
- Using well-floured hands, shape each portion into a patty about 1/2 inch thick.
- Refrigerate in a sealed container for at least 30 minutes (or up to 1 day) or freeze for later use.
- Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Cook the burgers for 5 minutes per side, or until browned and heated through. Spoon the remaining 2 tablespoons of BBQ sauce over the burgers during the last few minutes of cooking.
- Serve immediately on buns with your favorite toppings!
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
