How to Make Apple Pie With Red Hots
- In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of water, 1 cup of granulated sugar, and 12 red hots candies. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the red hots are completely dissolved and the mixture is syrupy.
- Add 6 cups of peeled, cored, and sliced apples (about 6 medium apples; use a mix of varieties for best flavor, or use about a dozen crabapples if desired). Cook over medium heat until the apples are tender, about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- In a small bowl, whisk together 1/4 cup all-purpose flour and 2 tablespoons of melted butter until smooth. Stir in 2 tablespoons of lemon juice.
- Add the flour-butter-lemon juice mixture to the apples and red hot syrup. Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the filling has thickened slightly.
- Pour the filling into your prepared pie crust. Top with the other crust, crimping the edges to seal. Cut several slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
