How to Make Basic Beef Stew Very Hearty

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve 2 beef bouillon cubes in 1 cup of warm water.
  2. In a large resealable plastic bag, combine 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, and 1 tablespoon paprika.
  3. Add 2 lbs of beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch cubes, to the bag. Seal and shake to coat the meat evenly.
  4. Spray your slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray. Add the contents of the bag to the slow cooker.
  5. Add 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce and 2 bay leaves.
  6. Slowly pour 4 cups of beef broth over the beef mixture. Add 1 large chopped onion, 2 lbs peeled and cubed potatoes, 1 lb peeled and chopped carrots, and 2 chopped celery stalks.
  7. Cover and cook on low for 10-12 hours, or on high for 4-6 hours, or until the beef is very tender.
  8. Before serving, stir gently to combine all ingredients. Remove bay leaves.

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
