Ingredients for Beef And Broccoli
- Beef Flank Steak
- Light Soy Sauce
- Black Pepper
- 1 tablespoon sambal oelek (or to taste)
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- Cornstarch
- Fresh Broccoli
- 4 tablespoons peanut oil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- 1/2 cup water
- Garlic Cloves
How to Make Beef And Broccoli
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together soy sauce, black pepper, sambal oelek, sesame oil, and cornstarch.
- Add sliced beef to the marinade, ensuring each piece is coated. Marinate for at least 15 minutes (longer is better!).
- Heat 2 tablespoons of peanut oil in a wok over high heat until it begins to smoke. This is crucial for the signature wok hei (smoky flavor).
- Add broccoli florets and salt to the wok. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until the broccoli is bright green and slightly tender-crisp.
- Add 1/2 cup of water, cover the wok with a lid, and steam for 3-4 minutes, or until the broccoli is tender and the steam escapes from the edges.
- Remove the broccoli and any accumulated liquid from the wok and set aside in a bowl.
- Reheat the wok over high heat. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of peanut oil.
- Once the oil is hot, add the minced garlic and stir-fry for about 1 minute until fragrant and lightly browned.
- Add the marinated beef to the wok and stir-fry for about 1-2 minutes, until the beef is browned and cooked through. Do not overcrowd the wok; work in batches if necessary.
- Return the broccoli and its accumulated liquid to the wok.
- Stir-fry everything together for another 30 seconds to combine flavors and heat through.
- Serve immediately over rice. Garnish with sesame seeds (optional).
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Small additions can make a big impact! Try a sprinkle of fresh herbs, a dash of your favorite spice blend, or a squeeze of citrus just before serving to really enhance the flavors of your dish.
