How to Make Apple Sausage Stuffing
- **Broth Mixture:** In a medium saucepan, whisk together 1 cup of chicken broth, 1 packet of (your favorite brand) gravy mix, and 1/4 cup melted butter. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened (about 5-7 minutes).
- **Sausage & Bacon:** In a large skillet, cook 1 lb. sausage (Italian or breakfast) and 4 slices bacon until almost crisp. Remove sausage and bacon from skillet; set aside.
- **Sauté Vegetables & Apples:** Discard all but 2 tablespoons of bacon drippings from the skillet. Add 1 medium onion (chopped), 2 stalks celery (chopped), 8 oz. mushrooms (sliced), 2 medium apples (peeled, cored, and diced – Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended), 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley, and 1 teaspoon dried sage. Sauté for 5-7 minutes, until softened.
- **Combine Ingredients:** Add 6 cups of cubed bread (day-old is best) to the skillet with the sautéed vegetables. Stir in the cooked sausage and bacon.
- **Add Broth:** Pour the prepared broth mixture over the stuffing mixture. Stir gently to combine.
- **Season & Bake:** Season generously with salt and pepper to taste. Transfer the stuffing to a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Cover with foil and bake in a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven for 30-45 minutes, or until heated through and golden brown.
- **Optional:** For extra crispiness, remove the foil during the last 10 minutes of baking.
