How to Make Applebee's Classic Patty Melt Copycat

  1. In a small bowl, mix together minced garlic, salt, and pepper.
  2. Season both sides of each beef patty generously with the garlic salt and pepper mixture.
  3. Heat a grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Add patties and cook for 4-5 minutes per side for medium doneness, or to your desired level of doneness.
  4. While the patties cook, melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a separate skillet over medium heat.
  5. Spread mayonnaise evenly on one side of each slice of bread.
  6. Place bread, mayonnaise-side down, in the melted butter, swirling to coat both sides lightly.
  7. Top two slices of bread with two slices of Swiss cheese each and the remaining two slices with two slices of cheddar cheese each.
  8. In a clean skillet, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until softened and caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  9. Place the cooked burger patties on top of the Swiss cheese-covered bread slices.
  10. Top the patties with the caramelized onions.
  11. Carefully place the cheddar cheese-covered bread slices on top to create the sandwich.
  12. Gently press down on the sandwich. If desired, you can lightly toast the sandwich in a pan until the cheese is melted and the bread is golden brown.
  13. Cut the sandwich in half and serve immediately. Enjoy!
