Ingredients for Applesauce Whole Wheat Cake

  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • Plain Yogurt
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • All Purpose Flour
  • Whole Wheat Flour
  • Natural Bran
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup raisins

How to Make Applesauce Whole Wheat Cake

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F (160°C). Grease and flour a 10-inch bundt pan or tube pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter and 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in 2 large eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  4. Stir in 1 cup plain yogurt until just combined.
  5. Add 1 cup unsweetened applesauce, 1 tablespoon orange zest, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Mix until well incorporated.
  6. In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 cups whole wheat flour, ½ cup all-purpose flour, ½ cup wheat bran, 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and 1 cup raisins. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  7. Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 70-80 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Let the cake cool in the pan for 20 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
