How to Make Bacon Turnovers
- In a large bowl, combine 1 cup grated carrots, 1/2 cup grated potatoes, 1/4 cup finely chopped onion, 4 slices cooked bacon (chopped), 2 tablespoons water, 1 tablespoon soy sauce (or your favorite sauce), and 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper to taste. Mix well.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 cups all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
- Add 1/4 cup vegetable oil and 1 cup skim milk to the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for 1-2 minutes until smooth.
- Divide the dough into 4 equal portions.
- Roll each portion into a 6-inch circle.
- Place 1/4 of the filling in the center of each circle.
- Brush the edges of each circle with a little water, then fold the dough over to create a half-moon shape. Crimp the edges to seal.
- Place the turnovers onto a greased baking sheet.
- Prick each turnover several times with a fork.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 20-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Let cool slightly before serving. Freeze for later enjoyment; reheat in the microwave for 3-5 minutes on high.
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Elevate your dish with simple flavor boosters! A final flourish of freshly chopped herbs can add incredible brightness, while a squeeze of lemon or lime juice right before serving can awaken all the flavors. Don't underestimate a sprinkle of quality finishing salt or a drizzle of good olive oil to make your creation shine.
