How to Make Beef Patties With Tomato Spice Butter
- In a large bowl, gently combine 1 lb ground beef, 1/2 cup cooked rice, 1 tbsp curry powder, and 1/2 tsp salt.
- Shape the mixture into eight equal patties (approximately 1/2 inch thick).
- Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for 3 minutes per side, or until cooked through and browned.
- Remove the patties from the skillet and drain on paper towels. Keep warm.
- Add 1 tbsp more oil to the skillet. Add 1/2 cup chopped onion, 2 cloves minced garlic, and 1 inch grated ginger. Sauté for 2 minutes, or until softened.
- Stir in 1 tsp ground cumin, 1 tsp ground coriander, 1/2 tsp ground mustard seeds, 1 tbsp brown sugar, 2 tbsp tomato paste, 1 (14.5 oz) can undrained diced tomatoes, and 1/4 cup water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer. Cover and cook for 10-15 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened.
- Carefully transfer the sauce to a blender or food processor. Blend until completely smooth.
- Stir in 2 tbsp butter until melted and incorporated. Pour the sauce generously over the warm beef patties and serve immediately.
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Chef's secret: layers of flavor make a dish truly memorable! Consider what a little extra something could bring – perhaps a touch of acidity like a good vinegar or citrus zest, a hint of smokiness from paprika, a bit of umami from mushrooms or soy sauce, or a sprinkle of toasted nuts for texture. Experiment and taste as you go!
