How to Make Severed Hand Pies

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large sauté pan over medium heat.
  2. Cook 1 medium onion, chopped, until slightly translucent (about 5 minutes).
  3. Add 1 pound ground beef and brown, breaking it up with a spoon (about 8-10 minutes).
  4. Drain off excess grease.
  5. Stir in 1 (15 ounce) can sloppy joe sauce, 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper, 1/4 cup chopped celery, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, and salt and pepper to taste. Simmer uncovered for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  7. Trace your hand on cardboard to create a hand stencil.
  8. On a lightly floured surface, roll out 1 (14.1 ounce) package refrigerated pie crusts to about 1/8 inch thickness.
  9. Use a paring knife to cut out 8 hand shapes from the pie crust.
  10. Brush the edges of 4 of the hand shapes with egg wash (1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water).
  11. Add 2 tablespoons of the sloppy joe filling and 2 tablespoons shredded cheddar cheese to the center of each of the 4 unbrushed hand shapes.
  12. Top each with a brushed hand shape, pressing firmly around the edges to seal.
  13. Crimp the edges with a fork and brush the tops with remaining egg wash.
  14. Bake for 14-16 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  15. Let cool slightly before serving warm. Enjoy!
