How to Make Asian Burgers
- In a large bowl, combine 1 pound ground beef, 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion, 2 cloves minced garlic, 1/4 cup soy sauce, 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce, 1 tablespoon sesame oil, 1 teaspoon grated ginger, and 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes. Gently mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into 4 patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
- Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side, or until cooked through and browned. For grilling, preheat your grill to medium heat and cook for the same amount of time.
- During the last minute of cooking, sprinkle the patties with salt and pepper to taste.
- While the patties cook, spread mayonnaise (or your preferred sauce) on the cut sides of 4 kaiser rolls. Assemble the burgers with your favorite toppings (suggestions below).
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Chef's secret: layers of flavor make a dish truly memorable! Consider what a little extra something could bring – perhaps a touch of acidity like a good vinegar or citrus zest, a hint of smokiness from paprika, a bit of umami from mushrooms or soy sauce, or a sprinkle of toasted nuts for texture. Experiment and taste as you go!
