How to Make Barbecued Tofu

  1. Press 1 block (14 oz) extra-firm tofu to remove excess moisture. Freeze for at least 2 hours, then thaw completely and press again. Chop into 1-inch cubes.
  2. Saute 1 medium onion, chopped, and 2 cloves garlic, minced, in 1 tablespoon olive oil until softened (about 5 minutes). Add 1 teaspoon smoked paprika, 1/2 teaspoon chili powder, and 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional).
  3. Add 1 bell pepper (any color), chopped, and saute until bright green and slightly tender (about 5 minutes).
  4. In a bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup BBQ sauce, 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon maple syrup, and 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard.
  5. Combine the sauteed vegetables and the BBQ sauce mixture.
  6. Pour the sauce over the tofu cubes in a shallow baking dish.
  7. Bake, covered, at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes.
  8. Uncover and bake for another 30 minutes, stirring frequently, until the tofu is nicely browned and the sauce has thickened.
  9. Serve over rice or your favorite grain. Garnish with sesame seeds (optional).
