Ingredients for Bethal S Sugar Cookies Aka Cut Out Cookies

  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • Salt
  • 1 teaspoon lemon extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

How to Make Bethal S Sugar Cookies Aka Cut Out Cookies

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a small bowl, add 1 teaspoon white vinegar to 1 cup of milk. Set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, sift together 4 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon baking soda.
  4. In a large bowl, cream together 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened, 1 cup packed light brown sugar, and 1/2 cup granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in 1 large egg.
  5. Add 1 teaspoon lemon extract and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract to the milk mixture. Stir to combine.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients (flour mixture) to the wet ingredients (creamed butter and sugar mixture), alternating with the milk mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  7. Mix until a firm dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add 1-2 tablespoons of milk; if too wet, add 1-2 tablespoons of flour.
  8. Chill the cookie dough for at least 1 hour (or up to overnight).
  9. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use your favorite cookie cutters to cut out shapes.
  10. Place cookies onto ungreased baking sheets.
  11. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 10-15 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden.
  12. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  13. Once completely cool, frost and decorate as desired. Enjoy!

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
