How to Make Greek Casserole

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef and chopped onions in 4 tablespoons of butter over medium-high heat. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Reduce heat to low. Stir in the tomato paste, red wine, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Add the canned diced tomatoes and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Remove from heat and let the meat mixture cool completely.
  5. In a medium bowl, gently mix the cooled meat mixture with the beaten egg and fine bread crumbs.
  6. In a separate small bowl, combine the Parmesan and Romano cheeses.
  7. Butter a large casserole dish (approximately 9x13 inches).
  8. Sprinkle the bottom of the casserole dish with 1/4 cup of the coarse bread crumbs.
  9. Layer half of the cooked macaroni over the bread crumbs. Sprinkle with 1/4 cup of the cheese mixture.
  10. Spread half of the meat mixture evenly over the macaroni and cheese.
  11. Top with half of the remaining cheese mixture, then layer with the remaining macaroni.
  12. Spread the tomato sauce evenly over the macaroni. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese mixture.
  13. Top with the remaining coarse bread crumbs.
  14. Pour melted butter evenly over the top.
  15. Bake for 30 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly.
