How to Make Savoury Bread Cases
- Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).
- Remove crusts from bread slices and spread lightly with margarine.
- Press bread slices, butter-side down, into a 12-hole muffin tin or tart pan.
- Bake for 15 minutes, or until bread is dry and lightly golden.
- While bread cases are baking, prepare the filling:
- In a medium skillet, sauté diced bacon and onion in 1 tablespoon of oil over medium heat for 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
- Drain off excess bacon grease using a metal strainer, reserving 2 tablespoons of the bacon fat.
- In a medium saucepan, heat the reserved bacon fat. Whisk in 4 tablespoons of flour until smooth, cooking for 1-2 minutes.
- Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk until smooth and thickened.
- Stir in the cooked bacon mixture, the mustard and cook for 2 minutes more, stirring constantly.
- Remove from heat, stir in the cheese until melted.
- Refrigerate the cheese sauce until ready to serve.
- Once bread cases are cool, fill each case with the cheese sauce.
- Optionally, sprinkle with extra cheese.
- Bake for 15 minutes, or until heated through and bubbly.
- Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy!
