How to Make Savoury Bread Cases

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. Remove crusts from bread slices and spread lightly with margarine.
  3. Press bread slices, butter-side down, into a 12-hole muffin tin or tart pan.
  4. Bake for 15 minutes, or until bread is dry and lightly golden.
  5. While bread cases are baking, prepare the filling:
  6. In a medium skillet, sauté diced bacon and onion in 1 tablespoon of oil over medium heat for 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
  7. Drain off excess bacon grease using a metal strainer, reserving 2 tablespoons of the bacon fat.
  8. In a medium saucepan, heat the reserved bacon fat. Whisk in 4 tablespoons of flour until smooth, cooking for 1-2 minutes.
  9. Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk until smooth and thickened.
  10. Stir in the cooked bacon mixture, the mustard and cook for 2 minutes more, stirring constantly.
  11. Remove from heat, stir in the cheese until melted.
  12. Refrigerate the cheese sauce until ready to serve.
  13. Once bread cases are cool, fill each case with the cheese sauce.
  14. Optionally, sprinkle with extra cheese.
  15. Bake for 15 minutes, or until heated through and bubbly.
  16. Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy!
