Ingredients for 30 Minute Shepherd S Pie

  • 2 lbs russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Ground Beef
  • Carrot
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • All Purpose Flour
  • Beef Stock
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Frozen Peas
  • Sweet Paprika
  • Fresh Parsley Leaves

How to Make 30 Minute Shepherd S Pie

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Boil potatoes in salted water until tender (about 12-15 minutes). Drain and return to the pot.
  3. While potatoes boil, brown ground meat in olive oil over medium-high heat. Season with salt and pepper. Crumble and cook for 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add carrots and onions to the meat; cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together sour cream, egg yolk, and heavy cream.
  6. Add the cream mixture to the potatoes. Mash until almost smooth.
  7. In a separate small skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 2 minutes.
  8. Gradually whisk in broth and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer and cook for 1 minute, or until thickened.
  9. Stir gravy into the meat and vegetable mixture. Add frozen peas.
  10. Transfer meat mixture to a small rectangular casserole dish.
  11. Spoon mashed potatoes evenly over the meat mixture.
  12. Sprinkle paprika over the top.
  13. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until potatoes are golden brown and heated through.
  14. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve immediately.

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Chef's secret: layers of flavor make a dish truly memorable! Consider what a little extra something could bring – perhaps a touch of acidity like a good vinegar or citrus zest, a hint of smokiness from paprika, a bit of umami from mushrooms or soy sauce, or a sprinkle of toasted nuts for texture. Experiment and taste as you go!
