How to Make Apple Herb Stuffing
- Melt 1/4 cup margarine in a large skillet over medium heat. Add 2 stalks celery, thinly sliced, and 1 medium onion, chopped. Cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Pour in 1/2 cup water and dissolve 1 cube (8 ounces) chicken bouillon.
- Cook until the bouillon is fully dissolved, about 1 minute.
- In a large bowl, combine 6 cups cubed bread (day-old is best), 1 teaspoon dried sage, 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional), and 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced.
- Add the celery-onion-bouillon mixture to the bread mixture.
- Gently mix until all ingredients are evenly combined. Do not overmix.
- Loosely stuff the turkey cavity just before roasting. Place any remaining stuffing in a greased baking dish.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30-40 minutes, or until heated through and lightly browned.
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Chef's secret: layers of flavor make a dish truly memorable! Consider what a little extra something could bring – perhaps a touch of acidity like a good vinegar or citrus zest, a hint of smokiness from paprika, a bit of umami from mushrooms or soy sauce, or a sprinkle of toasted nuts for texture. Experiment and taste as you go!
