Ingredients for Asian Beef Lettuce Wraps

  • Bibb Lettuce
  • Lean Ground Beef
  • Cooking Oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • Fresh Garlic Cloves
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • Ground Ginger
  • Rice Wine Vinegar
  • Water Chestnuts
  • Green Onion
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

How to Make Asian Beef Lettuce Wraps

  1. Rinse 1 large head of butter lettuce or 12 large leaves and pat thoroughly dry. Carefully separate leaves and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet over high heat, brown 1 lb ground beef with 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, breaking it up with a spoon. Reduce heat to medium if needed, and cook until browned. Drain off excess grease and set aside to cool slightly.
  3. Add 1 medium onion (chopped) to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
  4. Add 2 cloves garlic (minced), 1/4 cup soy sauce, 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce, 1 tablespoon grated ginger, 1 tablespoon rice vinegar, and 1-2 teaspoons chili garlic sauce (adjust to taste) to the skillet. Stir to combine.
  5. Stir in 1/2 cup chopped water chestnuts, 1/4 cup chopped green onions, and 1 teaspoon sesame oil. Cook for 2 minutes, or until onions are slightly wilted.
  6. Arrange lettuce leaves around the outer edge of a large serving platter. Spoon the meat mixture into the center.
  7. Serve immediately. Each person can spoon a portion of the meat mixture into a lettuce leaf and wrap it up like a taco.

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
