How to Make Barbecue Sauce Red
- Saute 1 medium onion, chopped, 1 bell pepper (any color), chopped, and 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper in 2 tablespoons canola oil or butter over medium heat until lightly browned, 5 to 10 minutes.
- Add 2 cloves garlic, minced, and simmer for 5 minutes more.
- Stir in 2 tablespoons chili powder, 1 teaspoon black pepper, 1/4 cup packed brown sugar, 2 tablespoons honey, and 2 tablespoons molasses. Cook, stirring frequently, until the sugars caramelize, about 8-10 minutes.
- Add 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar, 1/4 cup water, 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, and 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Stir in 1 (28 ounce) bottle of ketchup and simmer for 10 minutes.
