Ingredients for Applesauce Spice Cake

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • Sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • Vegetable Shortening
  • Water
  • 4 large eggs
  • Baking Powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Cinnamon
  • Clove
  • Allspice
  • Nutmeg
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Milk

How to Make Applesauce Spice Cake

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugars until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the applesauce, vanilla, and spices.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Stir in the chopped walnuts and raisins.
  7. Divide batter evenly between the prepared pans.
  8. Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean and the cakes are golden brown.
  9. Let cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Once completely cool, frost the cake layers. Spread frosting between the layers and on top and sides of the cake.
  11. Sprinkle with chopped walnuts, if desired.

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
