How to Make Kicked Up Macaroni And Cheese
- Cook 1 pound of elbow macaroni according to package directions until al dente. Drain, rinse with cold water, and set aside. Reserve the cheese packets from the Kraft Dinner box.
- In a large skillet or Dutch oven, brown 1 pound of ground beef with 1 medium onion (chopped), 2 cloves garlic (minced), and 2 stalks celery (chopped) until the beef is no longer pink. Drain off any excess grease.
- Add 8 ounces of sliced mushrooms and the cooked macaroni to the skillet. Stir to combine.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together 10.75 ounces of cream of mushroom soup, 10.75 ounces of cream of tomato soup, 2 tablespoons HP Steak Sauce, 1/2 teaspoon Tabasco sauce (or more, to taste), 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper, 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, and the contents of the two reserved Kraft cheese packets.
- Pour the cheese sauce mixture over the ground beef and macaroni in the skillet. Stir to thoroughly combine.
- Simmer over medium heat for 10 minutes.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer for 30-35 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add 1/2 cup milk (or more, as needed) to thin the sauce to your desired consistency.
- Optional: Stir in 4 slices of cooked and crumbled bacon during the last 5 minutes of cooking.
- Serve immediately and enjoy your incredibly delicious, kicked-up mac and cheese!
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
