- Thick & Chunky Salsa

- 2 tablespoons butter (for ground beef version)
How to Make Award Winning Chili With Unusual Twist
- In a large pot or Dutch oven, brown 1.5 lbs of ground beef (or 1.5 lbs of cubed beef) over medium-high heat. If using ground beef, drain off any excess grease. If using cubed beef, proceed to the next step.
- Add 1 large chopped onion (1 cup) and 2 cloves of minced garlic (1 teaspoon) to the pot. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in 1 (28-ounce) can of crushed tomatoes, 1 (15-ounce) can of tomato sauce, 1 (15-ounce) can of kidney beans (drained and rinsed), 1 (15-ounce) can of pinto beans (drained and rinsed), 1 cup of beef broth, 2 tablespoons of chili powder, 1 tablespoon of cumin, 1 teaspoon of oregano, 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper (optional), and 1 teaspoon of salt.
- If using cubed beef, add 2 tablespoons of olive oil along with the ingredients in the previous step.
- Bring the chili to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for at least 1 hour, or up to 2 hours for a deeper flavor.
- If using ground beef, stir in 2 tablespoons of butter after draining the excess grease before adding other ingredients.
- Before serving, taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Garnish with your favorite toppings, such as shredded cheese, sour cream, or chopped onions.
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
