How to Make Baked Manicotti With Pepperoni Meat Sauce
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Brown the ground beef and Italian sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain off any excess grease.
- Add the onion and garlic to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, pepperoni, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Meanwhile, lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in the bottom of the baking dish.
- Lay out the lasagna noodles slightly overlapping if necessary to cover the bottom of the baking dish.
- Spread half of the remaining meat sauce over the noodles.
- Dollop spoonfuls of ricotta cheese mixture over the meat sauce.
- Top with the remaining meat sauce and sprinkle with mozzarella cheese.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the sauce is heated through.
- Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Chef's secret: layers of flavor make a dish truly memorable! Consider what a little extra something could bring – perhaps a touch of acidity like a good vinegar or citrus zest, a hint of smokiness from paprika, a bit of umami from mushrooms or soy sauce, or a sprinkle of toasted nuts for texture. Experiment and taste as you go!
